Fila Brazilia are perhaps Pork's most widely known act, knocking up a wide range of remixes for the likes of DJ Food, Freakpower, Gailiano and, more recently, Busta Rymes in between their own releases. The end of 95 saw the release of the seminal 'Maim That Tune' CD' which although will be remembered for its dedication to Bill Hicks, delivered a whole range of strong tracks. From the dark depths of 'Harmonica's Are Shite' to the tribal feel of 'A Zed & Two L's', these guys definitely have a sense of humour and manage to keep you smiling as well as grooving. Six months later, they were back again, with 'Mess', a sophisticated fusion of guitar, sub bass, breaks and electric piano. The vibe this time seemed to experiment with more traditional forms of music, capturing a 'live'jam sound with sampling edits. The influences here are less jazzy, but they definitely groove taking us from bar room funk to 'Santana-esque' trip outs and back again to 90s techno. If that wasn't enough, The Solid Doctor (also one half of Fila Brazilia) has also returned with a new album 'Beats Means Highs'. For me, this album takes off where Fiia's 'Maim That Tune' left off. Here the cynicism of 'Faustian Bargain' keeps our sanity in check whilst the dub take of 'Sorrow' takes us back to the old skool before it metamorphoses into a jazzy new self. 'in The Offing' catapults the album at the beginning, ensuring that you don't get a chance to drift off. And what of Pork's new signing Baby Mammoth, who have their debut album out in July. Yet another eclectic journey which will no doubt live up to the Pork moniker. The label aims to just keep releasing quality music. Let's hope they do.
